Eight inscribed lead coins identified as Lion standing right ( A24, A25, E14, E15, E16, F10, F11, F12 ) with size and weight approximately matching this coin that were found in Akurugoda are cataloged in 1999 by Osmund Bopearachchi and Rajah Wickramasinhe in Ruhuna. An Ancient Civilization Re-visited . The coin above was obtained directly from the same collector who provided most of the items for that book. This coin is similer to F10 as the image of which in book appears to show the triangle above the leopard which also has the same type of stance.

I originally picked this coin thinking it may have images of two animals facing in opposite directions like in Teracotta seals (D.2-D.3), with the tail interpreted as a horse head with mane but now feel that this is not the case. This coin had been hardly cleaned (upper images) which was good.

After Ed Krivoniak success with cleaning some of these coins and his talk at PNS, I decided to give it a try which IMHO worked out OK. The coin was 6% lighter after cleaning. The removal of any toning of the coin makes it difficult to highlight detail in a scan. Much more clear when illuminated from side.

The coin was scanned at 600 dpi and displayed at 350 dpi. It was obtained in 2001 December from Mr A. Ratnayaka a collector in Katharagama, Lanka. Obverse :
