Obverse : Within a circle of dashes an elephant facing
left with a perspective ground. The year 1808 below a line.
Reverse : Within a circle of dashes CEYLONGOVERNMENT
preceded by a group of seven dots. The value in
Stivers 48 ST at center within a bead circle. Two lines below the T.
This Elephant with the end of it's trunk horizonatal is similer to the 1808 illustrated in Codrington, Mitchiner, and Pridmore, the 1808 96 St in Krause. The seven dots in three lines with 2-3-2 are similer to the 1809 48 Stiver in Krause, and unlike the five line 1-2-1-2-1 pattern in 1808 illustrated in Codrington, Mitchiner, and Pridmore. R. Nott reports six varieties among (6) 1808 coins and eight varieties among (12) 1809 coins he has from the Lowsley collection. Pridmore Lists 1 varieties for 1808 (P#10) case shown above; and 3 varieties for 1809 (P#11-13), i.e. Seven dots with two, one and no lines below T.
