Obverse : Within a circle of dashes an elephant facing
left with a perspective ground. The year 1809 below a line.
Reverse : Within a circle of dashes CEYLONGOVERNMENT preceded
by a group of seven dots. The value in Stivers
48 ST at center within a bead
circle. No lines below the T.
This Elephant with the end of it's trunk bent and head held high and the seven dots in three lines with 2-3-2 are almost similar to the 1809 48St illustrated in Krause.
R. Nott reports eight varieties among (12) 1809 coins he has from the Lowsley collection. Pridmore Lists 3 varieties for 1809 (P#11-13), i.e. Seven dots with two, one and no (case shown above) lines below T.

The VF coin was scanned at 600dpi and the images are displayed at
300dpi. It was purchased on mail order in 2000 November from a US Dealer.
The obverse seems to have been cleaned by an inexperienced collector.
Cleaning was very popular for collectors in the old days.
