A Major collection of Ceylon coins go for Live Auction only about once every decade. Since I started the Lakdiva collection I was waiting for the next. There maybe the one or two available rarely with some dealers at coin shows and about 3 or 4 trickle in on eBay each year. I had obtained 8 of the less rare types over 4 years. Four on eBay, two on mail order, one at local PAN coin show, and one from Baldwins Auction. Since I had established contact with most of the major Auction houses selling south Asian coins I was taken by surprise when I saw Dennis Gills advertised lots for mail order in the 2004 August issue of World Coin News. I gave him a call and he said he didn't even have E-mail and was selling a large number of Elephant coins and tokens for a collector, who had purchased most of the colletion of Gerry Porter author of Elephants In Numismatics and Exonumia from Ancient to Modern Time Unfortunately the 50 lots had been published in the Spring mailing list and the rarest coins had already been sold. I was able to however get two silver stivers I did not have from this collection. This was more than all the Silver stivers listed on eBay in 4 years, and made me realize there was still a community of dealers and collectors not yet on the Internet, a decade after it all started.
Interesting he said he had tried the computer and blamed MicroSoft for a frustrating operating system. I agreed with him and said I too tried hard to keep away from it.
