Cricket World Cup - 1996 Champions

Two commemorative coins were issued by Central Bank of Sri Lanka on 1999 May 4th to mark the Sri Lanka Victory of the previous Cricket World Cup in 1996. A five rupee nickel-brass coin for circulation was issued together with an one thousand rupee crown-sized silver proof coin.

Obverse : To the left an artist's impression of the Cricket World Cup trophy which was won by Sri Lanka, with to the right year 1996 right above in 3 lines the legend ලොක ක්‍රිකට් ශුරයෝ in Sinhala உலக கிரிக்கட் வீரர்கள் in Thamil and WORLD CRICKET CHAMPIONS. Issue year 1999 at bottom. The country name ශ්‍රී ලංකා in Sinhala, centered on top, இலங்கை in Thamil on left and SRI LANKA on right. All within circle of radial dashes along periphery with raised rim.
Reverse : At center an artist's impression of two cricketers a batsman and a wicket keeper. Above in English only the text 1999 CRICKET WORLD CUP - MAY 14-JUNE 20. in two arcs. The names of the 12 countries which participated in 1999 World Cup are embossed around the periphery. (SRI LANKA * WEST INDIES * ZIMBABWE * AUSTRALIA * BANGLADESH * ENGLAND * INDIA * KENYA * NEW ZEALAND * PAKISTAN * SCOTLAND * SOUTH AFRICA) Below the numeral 5 and the value රුපියල් පහයි in Sinhala, ஐந்து ரூபாய் in Thamil and FIVE RUPEES in 3 lines to the left and in Braille to right of the numeral. All within circle of radial dashes along periphery with raised rim.
Edge : The coin is 2.7 MM thick and Milled has incused lettering on edge in ශ්‍රී . ලං . ම . බැ . in Sinhala, இ . ம . வ . in Thamil and C . B . S . L . (Central Bank of Sri Lanka).

The Nickel-Brass coin has been minted to the existing standard Rs. 5/- in circulation. A Set of Ten uncirculated coins were issued to collectors sealed in plastic coin holder.

The coin scanned at 300 dpi and the images are displayed at 254 dpi. The Brilliant uncirculated commemorative coin was selected from a bag of 100 obtained from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. I thank Hemal Gurusinghe of Melbourne for gifting to me in 2005 April a set of the 10-coin holder he had extra.
