Gold Type III Pala - Jasmine flower and Chank
An anonymous Gold Type III Pala ( 1/4 Kahavanu ) with Jasmine flower
and Chank to right. Codrington Pala Type III(B).
A forgery with 25% Silver and a 3% trace of Gold.
The Silver fraction in Alloy with Copper (Ag%Cu) of 0.27 is also not
typical of medieval gold coins.

Obverse : Standing figure (Kuvera) head to right Crown, two
parallel lines ending in a dot. In a Dhoti (garment) indicated by two
curved lines on either side but no line between legs; left leg crossed
behind right. Right arm pendent; left is bent, and holds in front of
the face, a jasmine flower. To left variety apparently no
symbol ; to right fire-alter, A beaded circle along the periphery of
the coin.
Reverse : Nagari Legend Lakshmi under chank
to right.
The Pala was scanned at 600dpi and displayed at 450dpi.
It was gifted to me in 2004 November
by a dealer in Colombo Fort, Sri Lanka, who said it was a fake coin
made of silver and plated in gold.
